Art Dèco. Il trionfo della modernità

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of theExposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris, the major exhibition was born Art Deco. The triumph of modernity , which delves into the origins, development and rapid end of this refined phenomenon that defined the stylistic signature of ‘modernity’ in the 1920s.

An itinerary of about 250 works including glassware, porcelain, majolica, centerpieces, paintings, decorative sculptures, drawings, textiles, furniture, haute couture dresses, accessories, jewelry, as well as stained glass windows and mosaics that harken back to the luxurious settings of hotels, stations, and luxury transportation such as airplanes and ocean liners.

The display, enhanced by film frames, reproductions of posters and magazines, historical photographs and multimedia installations curated by Storyville, restores the climate and atmosphere of 1920s Europe: a world suspended between two wars, vibrant with overwhelming joy, splendor and glamour, but also with unsettling uncertainty. A journey through time to rediscover the taste and style of an unrepeatable era, suspended between modernity and historical fragility.

Curated by Valerio Terraroli, the exhibition project, promoted by the Municipality of Milan-Cultura and produced by Palazzo Reale and 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE, has as its partner institution Fondazione Museo Archivio Richard Ginori della manifattura di Doccia and is also made possible thanks to the collaboration with Iris Ceramica Group, Main sponsor of the exhibition and BPER Banca Private Cesare Ponti, Sponsor of the exhibition.

Equally essential to the exhibition project was the collaboration with Milanese museums, such as the Castello Sforzesco Museums and Palazzo Morando | Costume, Fashion Image, as well as the National Museum of Science and Technology “Leonardo da Vinci,” the Poldi Pezzoli Museum and FAI – Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano with Villa Necchi Campiglio.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Palazzo Reale is also hosting “The Royal Pavilion of Milan’s Central Station. An Art Deco Masterpiece,” a focus project sponsored by the Fondazione FS Italiane that, through a wide selection of photographs, documents and furnishings preserved in the Archives of the Fondazione FS Italiane, the Archives of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Milan) and the Civic Photographic Archives of the City of Milan, tells the story of the Royal Pavilion at Milan’s Central Station and documents the influence of Art Deco in Italian railway architecture.
