Animali dipinti

A journey through the history of art, exploring symbolic meanings, mythological narratives, and animal legends.

Throughout history, animals have been used by humans in art and literature to symbolize their religious, social, and political beliefs, and artists have found constant inspiration in the grace and beauty of animal forms. Through a carefully selected set of captivating images, this volume, a sequel to the previous book, The Painted Garden, by the same author, illustrates the presence of animals of land, air, and water in art.

For each species, myths, symbolic meanings, and historical and literary references are presented. Animals from the past peek out from painted panels, canvases, and frescoes throughout art history. Close-up details offer the reader an unusually intimate look at the masterpieces.

Quotations from acclaimed writers and thinkers of past centuries add beauty to the book and provide insights into the history of the paintings and their times. Featuring approximately 80 masterpieces from public and private collections, Painted Animals is a sumptuous celebration of the connections between the natural world and visual and creative expression.
