The catalog aims to revive interest in the activity andwork of Giovanni Fattori by presenting a substantial number of paintings from Italy’s most prestigious public and private collections.

Among the absolute masters of the Italian nineteenth century, Giovanni Fattori knew how to interpret in an original and innovative way both the themes of the great Risorgimento battles and the subjects related to the life of the fields and the rural landscape to which he was able to infuse, similarly to portraits, new dignity and solemnity.

The catalog, which presents more than 60 masterpieces by the Leghorn artist, including large-format canvases, precious tablets and a selection of etchings, is divided into nine sections and covers a wide chronological span from 1854 to 1894, from Macchiaioli experimentation and capital works of the 1960s and 1970s to the canvases of his mature years, which reveal his sharp and innovative gaze, capable of openings to the impending 20th century.

Concluding the itinerary are a number of emblematic works by Fattori’s pupils and artists influenced by the suggestion of his painting-Plinio Nomellini, Oscar Ghiglia, Amedeo Modigliani, Lorenzo Viani, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi-which testify to the lesson that the Leghorn master was able to stimulate in 20th-century Italian painting.
