Dubuffet e l’Art Brut

Catalog of the exhibition at MUDEC in Milan from October 12, 2024 to February 16, 2025

Mudec’s exhibition is organized in collaboration with CAB, Lausanne’s Collection de l’Art Brut, the world’s most important collection on the subject (more than 70,000 works) that grew out of the historical core collected and donated by Dubuffet to the city of Lausanne in 1971.

The catalog, introduced by three detailed essays by the curators and enriched by an interview with experts on Art Brut curated by Gustavo Giacosa, presents a large body of works by Jean Dubuffet and a series of documents that place in historical perspective the revolutionary concept he theorized of Art Brut: the art of the instinct, of the naked soul, endowed with an aesthetic power that arose on the margins of the official art world, the result of self-taught creators demonstrating imagination, ingenuity, talent and self-acquired skills. This is followed by a selection of works by the major historical figures of Art Brut (including Aloïse Corbaz, Adolf Wölfli, and Carlo Zinelli) and two sections, devoted to the themes of the body and beliefs, bringing together works by artists from five continents.
