Piet Mondrian. Dalla figurazione all’astrazione

The exhibition brings to Milan for the first time an exhibition project entirely devoted to the Dutch artist and the artistic evolutionary process that led him from figuration to abstraction, from the Dutch landscape tradition to the development of his unique style, which made him unmistakable and universally famous.

The exhibition was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Kunstmuseum den Haag, holder of the most important collection of Mondrian’s works in the world, and which lent sixty works, chosen from among those Mondrian and other representative artists of the Hague School. Other masterpieces from major museums and private collections will also be on display. With the concept by Kunstmusem Director Benno Tempel and curated by Daniel Koep, Head of Exhibitions, and Doede Hardeman, Head of Collections, the itinerary comes to life and unfolds through several thematic sections.

A common thread on which the comparison between the works of the early “figurative” period to those of the “abstract” period is carried out is that of landscape. A visual and therefore immediate key to the artist’s stylistic evolution, which is moreover useful for understanding the same entirely abstract works of his last period. A section of the exhibition is devoted to “De Stijl” (or “Neoplasticism”), a movement that arose in the Netherlands in 1917 on the initiative of Mondrian himself and Theo van Doesburg and was still active on the threshold of the 1930s, which innovated art, architecture and design.
