The image created by Barbieri becomes a place where a story can be brought to life, in which compositional elements are carefully chosen and placed in dialogue with each other so that they can “give their all” in the minimal space of the photograph.
Gian Paolo Barbieri was one of the greatest exponents who contributed to the definition of Italian prêt-à-porter and fashion photography. First precisely in fashion and then in ethnic and erotic photography, his gaze on the body took shape, investigated and observed the soul.
To the master who marked the history of contemporary costume photography, the Fortress of Bard dedicates a major retrospective in collaboration with the Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation in Milan, curated by Emmanuele Randazzo, Catia Zucchetti and Giulia Manca.
Collected within the catalog are the 112 photographs on display, including as many as 88 previously unpublished ones ranging from the 1960s to the 2000s, the result of extensive research conducted within the artist’s analog archive, a cultural and historical heritage, held by the Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation.
