The animal world has always inspired fantastic images. The hybridization of humans and animals is as old as art and religion: just think of Egyptian or Hindu deities, or the masterpieces of a visionary painter like Hieronymus Bosch.

The creatures covered in this volume are not animals as nature generates them, but “beasts,” imaginary beings born of the human mind, which mixes traits and characteristics, making the unusual plausible. The result is a graphic repertoire of fantastic zoology that tells much about human dreams and nightmares.

AUTHOR
DOMITILLA DARDI – A design historian and curator, she has been curator for design at MAXXI in Rome since 2010 and has been its Senior Curator since 2022. She is a lecturer in the three-year and master’s programs at the IED in Rome. She has been a visiting professor at several institutions, including the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, the Abadir Academy in Catania, and the MADE Program in Syracuse. She is co-founder and curator of the EDIT Naples design fair. She writes for several trade magazines and is the author of numerous monographs and essays.
