The history of street art from its beginnings to the present day in a never-before-seen exhibition that chronicles the evolution of urban art through the works of more than 30 artists.
The exhibition, curated by Patrizia Cattaneo Moresi and Michelina Simona Eremita, and realized by the Santa Maria della Scala Museum Complex in Siena in collaboration with 24 ORE Cultura, traces the history of the street art movement, from tags and illegal graffiti on New York subway trains to its transformation into a true global phenomenon and one of the most significant expressions of contemporary art, which in the last decade has also begun to impose itself on the art market. The project therefore analyzes this evolution, which involves all layers of society, thriving in festivals and exhibitions, entering museums and galleries, invading the web and social networks, and influencing fashion and society.
Through the works on display, including a wide selection of some of the most relevant artists on the contemporary European scene, the itinerary guides us to discover the great variety of styles, techniques and artistic sensibilities that are now united under the umbrella of so-called “urban art.” Without forgetting the big names that have brought this movement to international prominence such as Banksy, Obey and JR, thanks to whose notoriety street art has become part of the world contemporary art scene.
Also adding to the uniqueness of the exhibition are the unique and recently recovered exhibition spaces carved out of the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex, which overlook an ancient medieval street, in an interesting play of mirrors that takes us back to the ancient underground street in which it was carved out: an underground context, historically very distant, but emotionally not so distant from the tunnels of New York subway lines, where in the 1970s everything originated.
