Street Art Stencil Book

Published on the occasion of the exhibition “A Visual Protest. The Art of Banksy” at MUDEC – Museo delle Culture in Milan (November 21, 2018 – April 14, 2019)

Banksy is a mysterious artist: we do not know his face, we do not know his age, we do not even know his real name. On the other hand, his works are very famous, partly because most of them are not found in museums. Banksy is a street artist: his canvases are the streets, walls and bridges of the city, and his works are as direct and understandable as billboards. Banksy uses the stencil technique: in the studio he cuts out on a rigid support a negative mask of the figure he wants to make, then, once on the street, he places the outline on the wall by simply spraying color into the empty spaces. In this way he can not only work faster, but also reproduce the same work several times, offering it along streets all over the world. The fully illustrated volume shows younger readers some of the most famous scenes of Banksy’s work – from Bristol to London, Toronto to San Francisco – and includes as many stencils: to learn the technique of a great artist, and replicate his ironic, irreverent graffiti everywhere.
