MUDEC in Milan presents Matisse: The World in a Room <\/em>, a scientific and systematic exhibition project exploring the relationship between Henri Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambr\u00e9sis, 1869 \u2013 Nice, 1954) and the cultures he encountered during his studies and travels beyond European borders. The exhibition addresses a central and long-underestimated question: how African, Islamic, Russian, Pacific, and Chinese art shaped Matisse\u2019s artistic language from within, redefining the very boundaries of Western modernism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Produced by 24 ORE Cultura \u2013 Il Sole 24 ORE Group<\/strong> and sponsored by the City of Milan \u2013 Culture<\/strong>, organized in collaboration with the Mus\u00e9e Matisse in Nice<\/strong>, with Unipol as the main sponsor and support from Turisanda1924 – Alpitour World, the exhibition is curated by Ellen McBreen and Chiara Gatti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition is divided into six sections<\/strong> and brings together approximately 100 works, including paintings, works on paper, and sculptures from prestigious international institutions<\/strong>: the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection in New York, MoMA, the Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Orangerie, the Mus\u00e9e Picasso, the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay, the Mus\u00e9e du Quai Branly, the Bargello in Florence, the MUDEC, and others. Also on display is a collection of objects and textiles\u2014crucial elements in Matisse\u2019s work\u2014on loan from the Mus\u00e9e Matisse in Nice, the Museo delle Civilt\u00e0 in Rome, and other institutions, which trace the threads of Matisse\u2019s dialogues with art and design from other parts of the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special attention is given to decorative projects and artist\u2019s books: the monumental diptych *Oc\u00e9anie*<\/em>, the famous illustrations for *Jazz*<\/em>, Mallarm\u00e9\u2019s *Po\u00e9sies*<\/em>, Montherlant\u2019s *Pasipha\u00e9*<\/em>, and drawings of the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, the culmination of Matisse\u2019s polytechnic exploration. The exhibition is enriched by period photographs, including previously unpublished shots taken by the artist himself in Morocco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matisse: The World in a Room <\/em> It serves as a point of reference in the critical reevaluation of the concepts of otherness, primitivism, and Orientalism<\/strong>. Its strength lies in its philological precision: unlike exhibitions that have evoked the \u201cEast\u201d in a generic way, this exhibition highlights hybridization\u2014Islamic arabesques and the geometric patterns of Romanian clothing, Yoruba Gelede masks and medieval Russian icons\u2014bringing to light the ambiguity and complexity of a creative imagination that drew inspiration from distant worlds to construct one of the most original visual languages of the 20th century. This reflection invites us today to reinterpret Matisse\u2019s appropriations from a postcolonial perspective. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\n

The guided tour takes visitors on a journey to discover the heart of the exhibition: Matisse\u2019s studio as an open space for exploration, where African, Islamic, Russian, Chinese, and Pacific artistic traditions intertwine. This dialogue between artworks and objects offers a critical reinterpretation of the development of European modernism and its cultural references. The tour offers a nuanced interpretation of the artist\u2019s work, highlighting the role of intercultural influences and their impact on his formal, chromatic, and compositional exploration, while opening new perspectives on the dialogue between cultures, languages, and identities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing before the portraits on display, the children will receive an \u201cImage Passport\u201d and, divided into small groups, will have to complete four missions to track down clothing and ornaments from around the world and uncover their stories. In the workshop, creativity takes shape through the creation of \u201cMy Secret Outfit\u201d: drawing inspiration from the famous Bulgarian Blouse, each student will decorate a cardboard jacket using stencils, sponges, and collage, incorporating personal symbols and patterns to share their family traditions, a cherished memory, or their curiosity about the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much can we understand about a person from a simple image? This activity guides the class in interpreting portraits in a dynamic way, to discover how each work of art can transform, conceal, or reveal identity at the intersection of reality and fiction. In the exhibition, divided into small groups and armed with special Portrait Cards, the students will closely analyze the gazes, postures, and colors of the subjects depicted. They will follow Matisse\u2019s journey through the metamorphosis of the face: a journey in which the real figure loses its details to become a pure synthesis of lines and space. In the workshop, this reflection becomes poetic action. Drawing inspiration from the artist\u2019s book *Jazz* and the papier d\u00e9coup\u00e9 technique, students will deconstruct and reassemble the images of the portraits, experimenting with how cutting can give the subject a new form. Only at the end will writing come into play, with two specific prompts: \u201cOthers see me as\u2026\u201d<\/em> and \u201cBut I am also\u2026\u201d.<\/em> This text will create a dialogue between the gaze of others and a deeper identity. All the panels will ultimately be bound into a collective volume: a veritable atlas of faces in transformation, demonstrating that a single glance is never enough to define who we are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Matisse, collage and visual synthesis were not merely techniques, but powerful tools for breaking down and reconstructing reality. The exhibition explores works in which European patterns, Kuba textiles, and Oceanic traditions coexist, demonstrating how one of the masters of the great avant-garde movements brought distant worlds into dialogue through a perfect balance of forms and negative space. In the workshop, students will use this geometric and minimalist language to map their own everyday cultural landscapes, made up of music (classical, rap, trap, global pop, pop punk), Korean TV series, and digital passions. Drawing on Matisse\u2019s principle of synthesis (a strict limitation of flat shapes and colors), the students will cut out and assemble their own identities on paper, accompanied by a short textual manifesto. The result will be a collective artist\u2019s book titled IL MIO JAZZ*, a pluralistic anthology that interprets diversity as a constellation of global influences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the workshop, families will collaborate to create their own \u201cScreen of Wonders<\/em>\u201d: made of cardstock with three panels, families will play with the chromatic contrasts typical of papiers d\u00e9coup\u00e9s<\/em>, superimposing Matisse\u2019s signature motifs onto textures and iconic objects from their own homes (the living room layout, a pet, a rug and its geometric pattern, a family memento). An experiential team-building activity inspired by the world of Henri Matisse, designed to explore communication, awareness, and group dynamics through art. Drawing on odalisques, studio interiors, and inspiration from travels to Morocco and Tahiti, the guided tour invites participants to interpret the exhibition as a space for connection: an environment where individual identities and work systems meet, influence one another, and are redefined. The concept of a \u201croom\u201d becomes <\/em>a corporate metaphor for boundaries, roles, and collaboration. During the workshop, each participant builds their own \u201cinner screen<\/em>\u201d: a visual tool representing personal skills and resources. Through drawing and collage, participants explore what they reveal to the team and what lies hidden behind <\/em>the screen, fostering awareness, trust, and the ability to share.
