Published on the occasion of the exhibition “Paul Klee. At the Origins of Art” at MUDEC – Museo delle Culture in Milan (October 31, 2018 – March 3, 2019)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

A leading figure in the cultural landscape of the twentieth century, Paul Klee was a poet, musician, powerful theorist, and above all a painter, the founder of several avant-garde groups and the protagonist of a brilliant personal artistic development. Art represented for Klee a moment of reflection on reality and the deep mechanisms of nature: “art does not reproduce what is visible, but makes visible.” His relentless research is evident both in the rarefied and essential quality of his works and in his choice of media and artistic techniques. Decisive were trips to Italy and North Africa, which infused the artist’s canvases with the warm, dense tones typical of those lands. Called by architect Walter Gropius to teach painting at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Klee exerted a decisive balancing act on the school, so much so that he was called “the extreme moral instance of the Bauhuas.” The decade-long Weimar experience was followed by one at the D\u00fcsseldorf Academy, interrupted when, in 1933, Klee’s output was labeled by the Nazi regime as an example of “degenerate art.” This volume traces Klee’s entire career, analyzing his major works and exploring his poetics through period photography, reproductions of the works and quotations from the painter’s numerous autograph writings. <\/p>\n\n\n

BY<\/strong> Raffaella Resch – With a degree in theoretical philosophy, she has worked at the Department of Culture of the City of Milan and the Antonio Mazzotta Foundation in the field of art exhibitions.
